Among the Rich and Famous

Arguably the best-known hotel of Amsterdam, the Amstel Hotel is certainly one of the most striking buildings on the banks of the Amstel River. Opened in 1867, the design of this ‘hotel of incomparable splendor’—79 rooms and suites, including a 116sqm (1250sqft) Royal Suite—was inspired by the French Renaissance style of the 16th and 17th centuries. Its initiator, doctor Samuel Sarphati, understood what it took to build a hotel with international allure: “People today want a hotel to offer the same kind of amenities that people are used to at home: space, air, light and also a good view, beautiful surroundings.” Not much has changed since. To this day, the grandeur of the Amstel Hotel keeps attracting royals, dignitaries and pop stars from around the globe.

Those who don’t want to get caught up in the urban bustle—the Leidseplein, Museumplein and Dam Square are only 15 minutes away—have numerous options: relax with afternoon tea or a glass of wine in the riverside Amstel Lounge, get something to eat in the informal atmosphere of the Amstel Bar & Brasserie or do some seriously fine French and Mediterranean dining in Michelin star restaurant La Rive, with a terrace overlooking the river. Furthermore, the Amstel Hotel features a health club with a heated 15-meter indoor pool, sauna, steam bath and fitness equipment, as well as a small fleet of boats for guests to make round trips on the canals.
