‘Rooms Dressed Like Models’
Part of urban-renewal project ‘The Red Carpet,’ Hotel The Exchange is located right between Amsterdam Central Station and Dam Square. The concept was thought up by the initiators of the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy. Just like its big brother, The Exchange is a 1-to-5 star hotel, with the amount of stars referring to the room size and amenities. There’s a good reason why The Exchange, housed in three buildings on the Damrak (the oldest dating back to the 17th century), refers to its rooms as being ‘dressed like models’: the interior of each of the 61 rooms—with beautiful names like “Hide and Seek,” “History Repeated,” and “Odd Room”—is designed by students of the Amsterdam Fashion Institute. To reserve a specific room, the hotel asks a surcharges of €35.
Hotel The Exchange is a haven of peace and tranquility in an otherwise very lively part of town. From Dam Square, it’s a short walk to the Jordaan district with the Anne Frank House and the many boutique shops in the Negen Straatjes (Nine Streets). An equally short tram ride with take art aficionado’s to the Museumplein, where the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum and Stedelijk Museum are located. Don’t know where to go next? Sit down for a moment to enjoy the ‘hit-and-run menu of soups and sandwiches’ of in-house restaurant Stock, or check out the 230sqm contemporary department store Options! (Yes, including exclamation mark.)
